The first action that God does in the Bible is create. The first sentence of Genesis says, “In the beginning, God created…” God was and will always be the greatest designer. Look around you and you will see His beautiful design and creation all around. Everything in this world was designed and created. Design and creation are the focus of our new STEM education program in our new makerspace at Illiana. “STEM” has to be the biggest buzzword in education in recent years. Science and Math have been around forever, but STEM education takes Technology and Engineering into a project-based learning environment and applies real-world problem solving through Math and Science. The national leader in STEM education is Project Lead the Way. Illiana is adopting the PLTW curriculum as we move into the new makerspace next year. Illiana will be teaching four new PLTW courses focusing on how to problem solve and think critically through the design process.
These four courses will allow students to perfect the design process and use it to create various designs for different applications. Our Introduction to Engineering Design course will give students the opportunity to use 3D CAD modeling and 3D printers to create a physical prototype. Students in our Civil Engineering and Architecture course will design new buildings and commercial structures using architectural software. Students will learn how a product goes from prototype to final product in our Computer Integrated Manufacturing course. We will incorporate all of those aspects and more through projects in our capstone Engineering Design and Development course.
